Located to the North East of Adelaide, Birdwood is surrounded by pastoral lands and vineyards. The existing blue stone house is oriented toward long distance valley views. The original home (1900s) has had several alterations and additions over the years before our client purchased the property.
The extensive refurbishment of the existing home was an impressive operation. Whilst respecting the heritage façade, the rear of the house was extended with new living areas designed to create cosy nooks whilst maintaining an entirely open plan living that blurs the lines between inside and out.
Our brief was to enhance and expand the house and gardens of the property. The house has two distinct halves which are tied together via a classic steel and glass pavilion. The extensions aesthetic is drawn from the existing rural structures surrounding the home. A new orangery, cricket pitch, pool and contemporary walled garden are highlights in the truly holistic approach to creating a place to live.
The design of the extension echoes a reworking of Australian architecture vernaculars, timber louvres, elevated form and pitched corrugated iron roofs. This house focussed on a zero carbon footprint and energy efficient existence.
